Q. Are you a member of a recognised professional body?
Yes, I am a member of BACP (British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and as such abide by the principles of good practice outlined in the Ethical Framework of the BACP.
Q. What happens when we meet for the first consultation?
You will have the opportunity to talk to me about the reasons you are considering counselling, NLP therapy or hypnotherapy and find out how I can help you. We will discuss the outcomes you want to achieve and agree on them. We will also discuss practicalities such as when you are available for appointments and the boundaries governing our therapeutic relationship.
Q. Are there any issues or situations you don't work with?
I work with a wide range of issues. However, if you presented me with a situation that I felt would be better dealt with by another professional specialising in working in a particular therapeutic field, I would tell you and give you the information you need to obtain the best possible help. Likewise, sometimes hypnotherapy is requested when it may not be the most suitable way of dealing with the problem. Again, I would discuss with you the alternatives and advise on the best way forward.
Q.What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Broadly speaking, counselling is a talking therapy which allows you to address specific issues, for example, bereavement or making an important decision.Psychotherapy is used when deeper issues, usually past experiences, are still causing distress, for example,a traumatic incident or childhood abuse. In practical terms there is often an overlap between these two therapies and we would talk about the best approach for you.
